Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Why Mental Health First Aid? 

Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized, evidenced based training program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. MHFA promotes open dialogue, reduces stigma, and encourages the public to seek support when needed. 

What It Covers:

Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency. MHFA focuses on depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use disorders. MHFA also teaches:

  • How to recognize common risk factors and warning signs

  • Crisis diffusion and follow-up tactics

  • Affirming and reassurance tactics

  • How to encourage appropriate help

  • Self-help and support strategies

 

MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE):

The course will teach you how to apply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE): 

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm

  • Listen non judgmentally

  • Give reassurance and information

  • Encourage appropriate professional help

  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

 

How to Apply the MHFA Action Plan:

You will  learn how to apply the MHFA action plan in a variety of situations such as when a person may be experiencing:

  • Panic Attacks

  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

  • Non-suicidal self-injury 

  • Acute psychosis (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)

  • Overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use

  • Reaction to a traumatic event

Mental Health First Aid is offered in the form of an interactive 12 hour course.

Benefits for individuals trained in MHFA:

  • Increased knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges.

  • Ability to identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with a mental health or substance use challenge.

  • Ability to utilize the skills and information  learned in MHFA to manage your own mental wellbeing.

Cost/Training Format:

*Trainings over 30 require 2 Certified trainers 

*Blended or In-person

**Certified means individuals who obtain certification in Mental Health First Aid training by successfully completing the Instructor Training Program offered by the National council for Mental Well-being. 

Cost: per 20 participants (12-hour course).

Student Mental Health Support

Reclaiming Minds Therapy and Wellness delivers mental health services through the school
system to address key financial and structural barriers that often prevent children from receiving
needed services for mental health problems. This can include:

Girls group on diverse topics such as:

    • Self-esteem
    • Communication
    • Boundaries
    • Conflict Resolution

1:1 Therapy – For students identified as needing additional ongoing emotional support.

 

The Workplace Series (For schools and Corporations)

These trainings are provided as a series with the goal of increasing staff retention and cooperation in the workplace:

    • Socio-Emotional Learning
    • Mitigating Burnout
    • The Wellness Initiative
    • Trauma Informed Practices, and various mental health topics

Educator Training & Consultation

We partner with your school or organization to provide consultation, training and support services to teachers, administrators, and support staff. Reclaiming Minds clinicians provide restorative justice practices to change the school’s culture and climate to improve student behavior.

Services include:

    • Coaching educators, teachers, and staff on Restorative Practices (RP)
    • Coaching behavioral health professionals on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
    • Conducting Adult SEL and other professional staff developments
    • Mental health psychoeducation for learning professionals
    • Student crisis prevention and intervention
    • Best practices for providing educational programming to at risk youth
    • Address non-academic barriers to improve learning outcomes

Parent/Family Services

Parental participation improves student learning no matter the grade level, socioeconomic status, or familial education history. Our services can include outreach workshops on how parents can foster their children’s learning, appreciate their role as a partner with the teacher, and participate in school improvement processes such as the LSC or PAC. Topics include:
